Urban Resilience

The waterfront centre is a transport hub where it is considered to be a freestanding structure that has zones along its central building axis. It will be built along the banks of the flooded plains of Brisbane River around South Bank, Kangaroo Point, CBD and other prime locations. The megastructure will possess urban design with active and green spaces and accommodate significant traffic of people. The concept is around the theme of resilience as a unique response to complex urban ecologies in 2100. The challenge is to have a busy urban intersection in the form of megastructure capturing the energy of the city vertically. The building will have modular with translucent and reflective materials taking a nonnostalgic approach yet having expanded views of Brisbane at a height. The basic form will be built with wood and available recycled steel members.

The zones have crossbracing between the column grid lines to increase its strength. Horizontal zones are further held up by the tension cables or stays, and the zones are perpendicular to each other to counterbalance. Also, in the future, new zones can be added if necessary to accommodate the rising population. Different zones like recreational, sports, entertainment, offices and hotels will be located in the building, making it an active public space. The structure has a ‘pod lift shaft’ at the central with core amenities surrounded with functional areas. First, the pods will be carried by the hot air balloons, and then they could enter the building to restock and refuel or pods used as a cable car to travel lower typographical areas. Lastly, they will be dropped into the Brisbane river where they can float and populate the Brisbane river. The pods and the megastructure are transient, adjusting to the surrounding atmospheric climate in 2100.
